INTERVIEW with NAPT

Brian Truglio - Producer/Director

Brian Truglio is a filmmaker and editor with 15 years experience in both film and television. Racing the Rez is his first feature length documentary. Truglio is a freelance editor and part time lecturer at Emerson College as well as a former cross-country runner, current distance runner. He has worked and lived on the Navajo reservation.

This documentary is a personal journey. As a high school cross-country runner at Watchung Hills Regional High School in New Jersey, Truglio lost a very close friend and teammate the summer before his senior year. Suddenly running took on a new meaning for his entire team. It gave them the time and space to come to terms with their loss and made him realize just how much running strengthened him in ways he never expected.

Truglio first traveled to the Navajo and Hopi reservations as part of a college assistant teaching program in 1991 and has been continually drawn back ever since. Knowing the long Navajo and Hopi tradition of running, he set out to see if cross-country was having the impact on Navajo and Hopi boys that it had on him. After three years and two seasons of filming, Racing the Rez is the story of that impact.

Truglio lived and worked in Dublin, Ireland for five years beginning in 2002 where he was Head of Editing for High Wire, a post-production facility, and a lecturer at the National Film School, IADT-Dun Laoghaire. He edited a wide variety of projects for RTÉ, TG4 (the Irish language broadcaster), Setanta Sports and BBC Scotland among others.

His credits include the documentary feature Here To Stay (Editor, 2006), following the political and personal struggles of a gay Filipino nurse finding his place in Ireland, Cosc Ar Ghneas / A Ban on Sex (Editor, 2005), an Irish language documentary on censorship of Irish literature directed and produced by Louis Marcus, and the short film Recoil (Editor, 2004), winner of Best Short at the 2004 Galway Film Fleadh.

Truglio's US credits are primarily in documentary and include Fenceline: A Company Town Divided (Associate Producer & Editor, 2001), School Prayer: A Community at War (Post- Production Assistant, 1999), an Emmy award winner in 2000, as well as programs and series seen nationally on PBS, Discovery Channel, History Channel, Travel Channel, and Animal Planet. His recent series editing credits include: Saving the Ocean (PBS 2012), High School Quiz Show (WGBH/PBS 2012), Design Squad (WGBH/PBS, 2009), The Works (History, 2008), and Build It Bigger (Discovery, 2007).

Truglio holds a BA in Philosophy with minors in physics and creative writing from Bucknell University and an MFA in photography, film and video from the Visual Studies Workshop as well as a Certificate in Documentary Direction from UCLA & FÁS / Screen Training Ireland.
